Dental Implant Healing Stages in Antalya, Turkey

Maki Dent Clinic

Dental implant healing does not begin only after surgery. Good planning before the procedure can also affect how smoothly your recovery goes.

Dental implant healing stages in Antalya, Turkey

Your dentist checks your oral health, jawbone and treatment area before placing the implant. They also look for anything that may slow healing or require extra treatment first. Based on these findings, your dentist creates a treatment and recovery plan that fits your needs.

If you are considering a dental implant in Antalya, you can contact Makident for an individual assessment and treatment plan based on your oral health and clinical needs.

Step 1: Dental implant surgery and early healing

Your dentist numbs your surgery area with local anaesthesia. So, you do not feel pain.

If there is a damaged tooth in your mouth, your dentist removes it first. This is usually done earlier. In other cases, the tooth can be removed and the implant placed during the same visit.

Your dentist then makes a small opening in your gum to reach your jawbone. A small space is prepared in the bone for the implant. The implant is then placed into the jawbone. This is now like an artificial tooth root.

After that, the dentist checks implant stability. A small cover or healing cap may be placed on top.

The gum is then closed around the implant with a few stitches. Some stitches dissolve on their own. Others need to be removed later.

Once the dental implant surgery is finished, you can usually go home the same day.

The implant is not ready for the final tooth straight away. It needs time to join with the jawbone. This healing stage usually takes a few months.

What can you expect in the first few days?

The first few days can be a little uncomfortable. This is normal.

You may have some pain and swelling around the implant area. Swelling is often worse on day 2 or 3. After that, pain goes down.

A little bleeding is possible on the first day. You may also see some blood in your saliva. This is usually not a problem.

The area can feel sore when you eat or talk. If you have stitches, you may feel them with your tongue. Try not to touch them.

Eat soft foods for a few days. Do not chew hard food on the implant side. Very hot food and drinks are also best avoided at first.

Follow your dentist's advice about brushing and mouthwash.

The pain should normally get better each day. Visit your dentist if the pain gets worse, the swelling keeps growing, the bleeding does not stop, or you see pus around the implant.

Step 2: The osseointegration phase

After the surgery, the dental implant needs time to settle into your jawbone. This stage is called osseointegration. It means the bone slowly grows around the implant and holds it in place. You will not feel this happening. But the bone is still healing under the gum.

This part usually takes a few months. Your dentist will check the implant before moving to the next step.

How to support bone healing?

  • Do not put too much pressure on the implant while it is healing.
  • Keep the area clean. Brush carefully and follow the cleaning advice your dentist gives you.
  • Try not to smoke. Smoking can slow down healing and make implant problems more likely.
  • Eat well during this period. Your body needs enough protein, vitamins and minerals to heal.
  • Do not skip your check-ups. Your dentist needs to make sure the implant is staying firm in the bone.
  • If the area starts to hurt more, swells again or the implant feels loose, call your dentist.

Step 3: Soft tissue healing and abutment placement

Once the dental implant is firm in the bone, your dentist moves to the gum-healing stage.

A small part – the abutment – is attached to your implant. It is the part that will later support your new tooth. Then the dentist opens the gum a little and places the abutment.

The gum now needs time to heal around it. This usually takes a few weeks. During this time, the gum starts to take the shape needed for the final tooth.

You may feel some soreness or mild swelling for a few days. Sensitivity is normal when you brush or eat.

Step 4: Dental crown attachment and final recovery

Now it is time to place the final crown. Your dentist places it after the implant and gum have healed well. The crown is the tooth you see above the gum. The crown is placed on your implant and lets you chew normally again.

Your dentist checks the size, shape and colour first. They also control your bite. Because your crown should meet the other teeth in the right way.

You will notice your new tooth during the first few days. Your gum around the crown may also feel a little sensitive at first. This should improve in a short time.

Transitioning back to solid foods

After your crown is fitted, you can slowly start eating solid food again.

For the first few meals, it is better to consume soft foods. Then you can start eating solid foods when chewing feels comfortable.

Your new tooth may feel a little strange at first. That is common. Avoid chewing on that side for a while.

When you bite, the crown should feel comfortable. It should not feel too high or cause pain. If something feels wrong when you chew, tell your dentist. A small adjustment may be all you need.
